  To an old Londoner, the aspect of the city in the small hours of the
  morning, in "the center watch" as these dark hours are known as within the

  warning bell of a hearth-engine. I listened with mild curiosity--it was
  too far off to concern me--and in contrast the sound with that of the
  hearth-engines of my younger days. It was more distinctive, however much less
  thrilling. The bell gave its message plainly enough, nevertheless it lacked that
  quality of urgency and pace that was conveyed by the rattle of iron
  tyres on the stones and the sound of galloping horses.
  
  Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. The sound was more distinct. Then the
  engine should be coming my means; and even as I famous the very fact, the clang of
  another bell rang out from the opposite route, and suddenly I grew to become
  conscious of a faintly pungent scent within the air. Then, as I turned a corner,
  I met a skinny cloud of smoke that was drifting up the road and seen a
  glow in the sky over the house-tops; and presently, reaching one other
  nook, came into full view of the burning home, although it was nonetheless

  appear in the roof flames poured out of the attic windows, and smoke and
  flame issued from the bottom floor, which seemed to be some kind of shop.
