  Your math is close but this measures knots not MPH so the 12
  (120) would be 138 mph and change and the 50 (500) would be 575 and change.
  I can't get it exact, but it looks like just what it says, it's
  timing a 5 mile run. Just to clarify, you're saying
  the sweep hand takes 2 1/2 minutes to complete one circuit?

  (I have no idea if they even had sonar in WWII). Also, the units
  listed on the dial are sm, which would not be a rate. In trying to help
  with this WWII Navy Submarine Torpedo-timing Elgin stop watch,
  I have become interested in adding an example of one of these to my own collection! I believe that part
  of the problem with the Elgin I posted, is that although it will run, it cannot be reset to zero.
  I have not been able to find any diagrams or parts
  listing of the movement, however. Dave - the movement on your Elgin appears identical to the Elgin in my post.
  The hole you mention is for a screw on the dial plate that doesn't mean anything in this watch as far as
  the hack feature.
